Intellectual Formation

The Lyceum Institute offers courses of study in the Classical Trivium (Grammar, Logic, Rhetoric), Language Studies (Latin, Greek), Philosophy (including both intensive Seminars and Reading Circles), and a series of Foundations courses which prepare the contemporary student for more intense intellectual formation.

Our courses combine live instruction with asynchronous lectures and readings, incorporate individual coursework, writing assignments, translation practices, and more. They have been designed to provide a maximum of scheduling flexibility while simultaneously preserving both seriousness and personal relationships with the instructor.

Each offering is taught by a qualified member of our Faculty and forms part of a coherent approach to learning, forming the whole human mind with the habits needed to thrive in the digital age.

“To gain knowledge, and most of all to gain the knowledge of wisdom, is a matter not simply of studying, of receiving information, of reading or listening, but a matter of habit, and a habit of pursuing the truth with an actively-inquisitive approach: which is to say, a habit of humility before one’s own ignorance.”
Education and Digital Life

Beyond the University

Beyond the University exists because the modern university, even where it succeeds, has become inadequate to the true tasks of education.  Education is not the transmission of information or preparation for employment, but the formation of good intellectual habits.  These aims no longer fit comfortably within institutions ordered primarily toward efficiency, expansion, and measurable outcomes.  The Lyceum Institute was founded to provide a genuinely different institutional form—one ordered toward education as an integral part of life rather than as a credentialing process.

The Lyceum cultivates enduring intellectual habits of inquiry, order, and memory through rigorous seminars, focused studies of the Trivium, classical languages, guided reading, and sustained inquisitive conversation.  By supporting the Lyceum Institute, you help sustain an independent public institution devoted to education ordered toward truth, continuity, and long-term intellectual formation.  Your gift ensures that this alternative remains available—not only for today’s students, but for generations to come.
