Advancing Our Understanding
Oftentimes, the end goal of “research” in the humanities becomes co-opted: that is, instead of pursuing a deepened understanding, one undertakes research to publish a book, advance one’s career, or win grants.
Here, “research” is reconceived as part of the communal life of the mind. We study not so that we may work in isolation, but so that our understanding of life may improve our living of it. Our projects are not pure speculative distraction, but focused inquiries undertaken within the community.
As our Institution grows, so too will our research capacity—thereby adding to the intellectual vitality of our collective pursuit of wisdom.
