Continuing from the work done in the first seminar, concerning the Difficulties of Technology, this second series of modules addresses the concept of technological opportunity. Led by Brian Kemple and Adam Pugen, the seminar included lectures, curated readings, and weekly discussion sessions (lasting from 1-3 hours) dialectically investigating the real possibilities and always-present difficulties posed by technological opportunity inherent in human life. Like all our inquiries, these lectures and discussions are preserved in the Lyceum Institute’s archives, providing a well of insight to which we can continually return.
In this document, we provide a thematic overview of our seminar’s themes and conclude with a theoretical summary of the issues addressed in the following white papers. Each module of the seminar receives treatment in a distinct white paper (further elaborated in advice for practical implementation, key findings, and theoretical contributions derived from both the lectures and the discussion sessions) can be found in the menu for Humanitas Technica.
Introduction: Can Technology Help Our Humanity?
It is no exaggeration to say that human beings today are deeply divided on the possibilities of our technological development. While many material conditions of life have been bettered through the advance of medicine, refrigeration, high-speed transit and communication, the ability to record and store images, videos, audio, and so on, each innovation has seemingly come also with many costs: not only damages done to the environment, or incidental loss of life (as in traffic accidents), but to what we might consider “spiritual” goods. One finds many eloquent arguments, for instance, against modern farming techniques, not only for the advent of pesticides or corporate destructions of the small, independent farm, but also for the effects of disconnecting people from the land. Caring for property, investing oneself in its well-being and the products that come from it—not only because they are useful but because they are good—seems a particularly human consideration that has been ignored in much of the modern technological calculus.
One may, in reflecting upon this state of affairs, observe divergent trajectories in the human perspective on technological development. On the one hand, we see a developing optimism, exhibited in technological-accelerationists. This perspective believes that we may, through technological mastery, solve all the various problems we encounter—not only those impediments of nature that stand in the way of our goals, but so too the problems we create for ourselves through our attempts at technological solution. Thus emerges a kind of technophilia: a love for technology’s possibilities, even if they are far from realization.
Contrariwise, on the other hand, we see a growing pessimism, unfolding amidst the aforementioned experience of spiritual loss. From this perspective, every success of technological development is intrinsically limited by its consequences for human living. Solutions to problems, that is, do not alone constitute the metric by which technology should be measured. The costs incurred by the pursuit of technological possibility are too great—we can pay for them only, it seems, with our very humanity. Thus one sees a certain fear of technology—or perhaps more accurately, of technologists—which gradually becomes hatred.
Within this seminar, we sought to understand not these two perspectives as such, but to see if there is not a “third way”. This pursuit builds upon that accomplished in the first seminar, wherein technology was understood not as a “problem” to be overcome, but a difficulty inherent in human living: that is to say, as something which follows from our own nature but which may distort our faculties and habits if not cultivated carefully.
As such, the third way proposed here relies upon the identification of principles by which technological development may remain proportioned to nature, especially human nature, and thereby aid us without overtaking us.
Vision for Technological Resolution
Among the ways that technological rationality has affected the habits of contemporary Western society: it has made us very “opportunistic”. The rapid pace of life, especially in the digital age, places pressure on us to seize opportunities quickly or watch them pass us by in the hands of others. These opportunities may consist in conversations, offers to join a movement or business, to take a job, to fill a niche, make an investment, take a seminar, go on a date, or any of a thousand different situations that can be encountered on any given day. But this opportunistic attitude concerns not only this or that choice we have to make: rather, it concerns how we have become habituated to interpret the world in which we live.
An interesting point to note: this opportunism affects not only the technophiliacs, but so too the technophobists. The former may be attuned to opportunities for increasing control and wealth via technology; but the latter are attuned to opportunities for advancing their own anti-technological ideologies—as, for example, every news story which seems to indicate the inevitable harms of technological development or the persons behind it.
Put otherwise, contemporary opportunism is only for the immediate. It is shortsighted in a way which exhibits thinking dominated by technological rationality. This habit of thinking in the short term reinforces the parallel common habit of thinking of technology in terms of things—artifacts produced by human hands (directly or indirectly). This movement of thought immediately to such artifactual products, be they instruments or systems—as was demonstrated in the Difficulties of Technology—ignores the essence of τέχνη: namely, that it is a natural capacity for human making.
When we regard technological artifacts as either “neutral” or “autonomous”—as though what they are in themselves consists in something intrinsically independent of the artificer—we deny both the importance and the intrinsic humanity of τέχνη. Yet such a regard is today widespread. We have come to see τέχνη as a self-governing activity. It is because of this that we ourselves become governed by τέχνη. Such governance results in our shrot-sightedness. In other words, when τέχνη becomes self-governing, it becomes disconnected from proper habits of human vision: not only a lack of prudence, but more immediately our methods of specialized technique suffer from deficient apprehension of the whole to which they belong. If our virtues of τέχνη are not to result in the kind of inhuman fragmentation that has become progressively more disruptive throughout modernity, in other words, they must be restored to a habit of ποίησις (poiesis): a habit of grasping what is possible for each part precisely as it is part of a whole.
This habit consists in disclosing not merely of what can be done, that is, but what it is fitting to do: how each part ought to belong to some whole greater than itself. Restoring this capacity for vision—and specifically how the virtues of τέχνη are subordinate to it—is necessary if prudence is to wrest the ordering of human life back from technologized rationality.
Or to put this otherwise: the opportunities of technology we are seeking to understand in this seminar are not the opportunities, precisely speaking, of this or that particular initiative, of this or that particular advancement; but of how, through such advances, through such instruments and systems, we might restore τέχνη to its proper place, as a legitimate human activity of making that fits the whole of human living.
Building Patterns that Live
At a more immediate level, we today experience the inhuman governance by technologized rationality in the patterns that characterize daily living—where many of our opportunities are not truly chosen, but determined in advance for us. Consider, for instance, the opportunity to buy a new car at a good price. The car will allow us to get from home to work and back again more quickly and with greater comfort than taking public transit. The good price will allow us to afford it (without “too much debt”, let us say), so that we can continue to purchase other things, contribute to our retirement funds, and so on.
But already we can see that this opportunity resides within a presupposed environment that may already be largely unfitting. Would it not be better—healthier, both physically and psychologically—if we could walk to work? Must we drive or be transported by vehicle? No doubt there are goods to the convenience of rapid transit: but must all transit be rapid?
Or consider renting an apartment. It may be nicely designed, laid out, have a good view, be convenient to work, shopping, entertainment—all the metrics on which apartments are commonly scored. But apartments are, by design, meant to be temporary; leased, occupied for a time, and then left to another. We do not typically invest ourselves into rendering apartments deeply fit to our own lives, but rather tend to fit our lives to those apartments.
The concept of pattern-recognition—popularly correlated with what characterizes the higher degree of human intelligence relative to other animals in the twentieth century—can help us to understand the problem: we need to recognize not just this or that particular pattern within life, but the pattern of lives as a whole—which patterns are often deeply affected by technological artifacts and systems. Technologies, that is, do not merely perform isolated functions, but—if and when they are adopted, both by individuals and communities—typically establish recurrent patterns of action, attention, expectation, and relation.
In an age of rapid technological advance and adoption, it is clear that an ability to recognize patterns as such (not just this or that pattern, but any pattern), enables one better to navigate the environment. However, being able to recognize patterns quickly only allows for survival and adaptation within the world of technologized life. Such a habit, alone, does not improve our living. Rather, we need habits also of resolving those patterns, back to the principles by which they should be rightly governed—especially when there are competing goods being sought.
Maintaining Human Proportion
Without such a habit of pattern-resolution, we tend to seize upon technologically-afforded opportunities that become distortive of the whole. There are many examples where we can see this having happened: the built environment (witnessed, for instance, in the size of cities, speed of transit, the sprawl—horizontal or vertical—of buildings), communication technologies, economic systems, education, and many others.
Here too, we see the problems that ensue from a lack of ποίησις. It is not only, in other words, that we should not do many of the things that we can: we do not even realize whether the things we can do contribute to or detract from a coherent whole of human existence. The fragmentation of the whole produced might be seen most clearly, today, in the systems of education into which many are forced or pushed. Most students are given a cluster of discrete and unrelated studies. Literature, history (or “social studies”), grammar (or “language arts”), mathematics, biology, physics, chemistry—these are not taught with any concern for their unity.
In consequence, they tend to result in a disproportioning of the human soul: the student does not know how to relate one object to another, and almost invariably develops an imbalanced set of interests—which may have nothing to do with the good of learning as such. This imbalanced disposition appears in many other areas of human life, as well.
The Difficulty of Opportunity
Few will think anything negative in association with the word “opportunity”. The very etymology of the word (from “ob-“, what is against or at a remove from oneself, and “portus”, a harbor or receptacle) signifies a fitting but not yet realized possibility. Yet, despite the positive meaning of the word, we must recognize that opportunities can also come with challenges. For one, they tend to be mutually exclusive. Taking one opportunity almost always entails turning down others. Simultaneously, and as discussed above, the opportunity that appears to us most immediately may be fitting for the immediate future but unfitting for the whole of our lives.
Technologies have long given us many particular opportunities of just this kind: those that benefit us in the short term but, in the long, distort the whole. As existing technologies advance and new technologies come into existence, the number of particular opportunities continues to increase. In itself, this can quickly become disproportioned, particularly if our capacities for making are not resolved to a poietic vision of the whole.
To restore and maintain this poietic vision, we do not need better technology—for the ability to grasp the whole is not a matter of making, and is not an activity that can be extended by any instrument in the world, for the object of this vision, the whole, is irreducible to any of its material parts. We need, rather, a greater resilience in seeking technology’s resolution to our nature as human beings.
Thus, the “third way” between the aforementioned technophilia and technophobia is not a compromise between greater and lesser technological development, but a different principle of development altogether: technological advances should be cultivated but only insofar as they can be resolved into proportionate patterns of human life ordered toward genuine human flourishing.
Theoretical Summary
The Opportunities of Technology begins from the conclusion reached in the preceding Difficulties seminar: the characteristic danger of technological development lies not in extension as such, but in disproportion. Technologies are natural products of human rational activity, and consequently neither the rejection of technology nor the pursuit of ever-greater technical power provides an adequate principle for ordering their development. The question pursued across the eight following papers is therefore aimed to be—while restrained and cautious—nevertheless genuinely constructive: under what conditions can technological extension contribute positively to human flourishing?
The principle which allows answering this question is the recovery of ποίησις as the rule of τέχνη. The papers do not propose a specific technique for making technology humane, nor a checklist capable of determining whether any device or system proves beneficial. Rather, they attempt to convey a mode of perceiving and judging technological possibility: one in which making remains subordinate to an apprehension of meaningful wholes, technological powers are evaluated according to the forms of human life they help bring forth, and technical success is resolved continually toward goods beyond the technical itself. From this first principle, the inquiry proceeds successively through pattern, environment, communication, economy, education, memory, and time.
As such, the first module, “Poiesis as the Rule of Techne”, establishes the conceptual foundation for the whole inquiry. Most contemporary technological discourse begins from already-developed instruments or systems and asks subsequently how they should be used, regulated, or adapted for greater ethical care. But this approach begins too late. Technology must first be recovered from its root in τέχνη: not principally machinery, infrastructure, computation, or power, but human making. Yet τέχνη, to be rightly exercised, cannot provide its own ultimate measure. Drawing especially upon Aristotle’s Poetics and Martin Heidegger’s essay “Building Dwelling Thinking”, the paper argues that technical making becomes properly human only when governed by ποίησις: the bringing-forth of meaningful possibility within an intelligible whole.
We proceed by asking how this poietic rule can become perceptible and practically operative in technical activity. Here we must first recognize that human beings do not employ artifacts or technological functions in isolation, as though they were wholly discrete objects or operations. Rather, we inhabit recurrent configurations of actions, expectations, relations, spatial arrangements, and events, and bring technologies into our experiencing and shaping of these configurations. We therefore propose pattern as a concept that fittingly mediates between poietic apprehension and technological making: ποίησις discloses meaningful possibility; patterns reveal the recurrent relational structures through which that possibility can become actual; τέχνη embodies or modifies those patterns; and “dwelling” names the form of life thereby enabled.
This emphasis becomes particularly important under conditions of electric and digital acceleration, where patterns change rapidly and their resolution seems increasingly difficult.
Christopher Alexander’s account of living patterns (discussed in the second and third modules) provides us a way of not only recognizing those patterns, but evaluating them; and from their evaluation, we are able to pursue their resolution. A living pattern does not maximize one isolated good but brings multiple real tendencies and tensions into a more coherent relation. A deadening pattern instead places them into chronic opposition and requires continual compensatory effort merely to inhabit it. Pattern-resolution therefore differs from technological “solution” or optimization: it seeks not to eliminate complexity but to discover a form in which distinct goods may coexist proportionately.
This requires us to think carefully about how such patterns become instantiated, first, in the corporeal world of the built environment; and second, in the relationships of communication, as well as the design of products, economies, and structures of education.
Concerning the environments in which we physically reside: because they are always brought into already-extant patterns of living, technological artifacts—no matter how benign in themselves—can never be truly and wholly neutral. Their incorporation invariably alters the constituent relations of attention, movement, significance, memory, expectation, and action; they therefore participate in constituting environments.
It is important to note that the modern mathematization of nature has provided extraordinary technical power precisely through abstraction; but that, at the same time, this success often becomes distortive because the abstraction is mistaken for the primary reality. Designs can then be imposed according to formal schemata without sufficient attention to the living patterns already present or naturally possible within a place. We must, instead, attempt to understand human environment relationally: a place is constituted not merely by the arrangement of material objects but through their significance for embodied, perceptual, intellectual, social, and historical human activity.
Digital mediation intensifies the question because digital environments possess relatively few of the natural limits that distinguish physical places. A single screen may simultaneously function as workplace, library, cinema, marketplace, correspondence desk, game, and social forum. Such malleability offers genuine opportunities but also collapses distinctions among activities and makes transitions nearly frictionless. The result is often an environmental flatness in which purposive action easily gives way to automatic engagement.
When we regard these environments specifically as regards communication, we must note the specific shifts that have followed the advent of digitality. Digital systems encourage information, communication, and knowledge to appear as interchangeable configurations of data. We should reject this reduction. Information can be transmitted without genuinely human communication, and communication can occur without producing knowledge. The genuinely positive technological opportunity afforded by digital environments, therefore, does not consist merely in increasing information’s quantity or velocity, but in structuring relations through which information can become material for genuine communication and, through communication, contribute to understanding.
We can see that social relationality in the modern age has become a field of technological making. When disordered, technologies of social relationality tend to collapse into the informational paradigm. Contrariwise, if guided by the rule of ποίησις, communication systems can be configured so that they foster continuity, reciprocity, shared attention, correction, and the common pursuit of truth. Conversational AI makes this distinction. The principal opportunity of digital communication, that is, lies in its ability to connect persons who otherwise could not enter sustained common inquiry; its principal danger lies in mistaking the signs of communication for the reality of relation and informational abundance for knowledge.
Seen from this perspective, we should recognize also that neither economically-relevant production nor the systems of economy themselves should be seen as autonomous mechanisms within which technological activity happens to occur, but as themselves forms of technology: mind-dependent ordering of resources, activities, exchange, norms, incentives, and relationships through which persons and communities maintain and advance their material lives. This economic order remains grounded in mind-independent realities—natural beings, materials, human capacities, needs, and places—but its concrete patterns are artifacts of human activity and therefore proper objects of poietic responsibility.
The concept of affordance constitutes the central explanatory bridge between poietic vision and economic activity. Artifacts and systems make certain actions available, intelligible, easy (“intuitive”), difficult, rewarding, or obscure. Economic systems do likewise. Prices, regulations, platforms, metrics, algorithms, and institutional structures teach participants what kinds of action count as profitable, successful, or normal. Digital networks have opened real possibilities for decentralized production and cooperation, but the history of the internet demonstrates that decentralized technical access does not automatically produce decentralized economic agency. New productive possibilities are frequently absorbed into platform structures whose metrics reward conformity, scale, and rapid monetization. We therefore aim at the discovery (or re-discovery) of contexts which allow us more poietic freedom in the technologies of economic production and exchange.
To this end, we identify meso-contexts—intermediate associations situated between isolated individuals and impersonal macro-systems—as the most promising scale for poietic economic action. Such communities can be large enough to coordinate production while remaining small enough to preserve personal knowledge, trust, responsibility, common goods, and intelligible patterns of association. Digital technologies may strengthen these communities, if rightly-ordered.
So too, we need to recover education from the flattened environment of modern technological rationality, and explore what new opportunities are afforded its pursuit in our contemporary situation. To begin that recovery, education must be distinguished sharply from training. Training communicates procedures and forms individuals in competent performance; contrariwise, education forms habits through which the learner becomes increasingly capable of inquiry, judgment, ordering, correction, and continued pursuit of wisdom. Because these habits—most especially the habits of questioning and ordering—cannot be reduced to the possession of information or the production of acceptable outputs, the availability of more information cannot by itself constitute educational progress.
Digital technologies possess substantial educational opportunity precisely in their capacities for access and organization. Searchable archives, transcription, indexing, comparison, structural recognition, and AI-assisted classification can reduce enormous quantities of mechanical labor and make possible inquiries previously beyond an individual’s reach. But these operations remain educationally beneficial only insofar as they return the learner to the objects of inquiry and strengthen his own habits of reasoning—which requires, most of all, that a proper vision of education perceive the interpersonal dimension of its pursuit.
Among the faults which have led to the flattened environment of human education is a misunderstanding of what it means for a human being to know, and, within that misunderstanding, specifically what constitutes human memory—a misunderstanding born of technologized rationality. Here instead, we distinguish human memory from mere technological storage. Storage preserves virtual signs; while memory belongs to a living subject whose past experience remains integrated into present cognition. Recollection is likewise distinguished from retrieval. Retrieval locates a preserved sign, while recollection is a purposive return through retained relations toward something previously experienced, allowing that experience to be rediscovered, corrected, and reintegrated within present understanding.
This distinction gives the technologies which digitally extend the retentive aspect of our memory an ambiguous but potentially extraordinary role. External supports have always participated in human remembering—stories, monuments, images, writing, books, calendars, photographs, and archives—but digital systems dramatically expand their fidelity, scale, searchability, and relational organization. Properly designed, these systems can become pathways to recollection: preserving not merely isolated informational items but conversations, revisions, chronological relationships, voices, annotations, and contexts through which persons and communities may return more adequately to their own histories.
Such opportunity depends upon the virtue of studiositas: a habituated desire to seek and retain truths that are actually fitting and significant for one’s own life, as opposed to curiositas, the indiscriminate accumulation of informational novelty. The natural faculty of human memory is necessarily selective and reinforced through social relationality. Traditions endure not because archives exist but because persons receive, interpret, correct, and hand on what they deem worthy of resolving into their own patterns of life. We therefore look for the opportunities today to enhance our memorative resilience: the capacity of persons and communities to return to their past without obscuring what we find inconvenient or undesirable, falsifying it into a preferred narrative, or allowing it to dominate the present (a vicious kind of nostalgia, that is). Digital preservation becomes a genuine human opportunity when it strengthens these living acts of recollection rather than substituting searchable storage for the work of remembering.
Finally, it must be said that few if any dimensions of life are more ubiquitously or thoroughly mediated by technology than time; yet the precision of contemporary timekeeping can and often does conceal the reality being measured. Drawing upon Aristotle’s account of time as the number of motion according to before and after, we distinguish temporal measurement from the motions and changes upon which that measurement depends. Clocks and calendars are indispensable instruments, but they have disproportioning effects on our lives when their abstractions cease to reveal time as grounded in motion, and instead become grids to which human lives are required to conform.
The corrective—that few if any would accept—is not a rejection of temporal measurement. It belongs to us properly, as the kinds of being we are, that we measure, schedule, distinguish, and anticipate things to come; no few goods are a direct result of better temporal measurement. Yet, as always, we must confront a difficulty of proportion: what duration belongs to the nature and end of a given activity? Technical acceleration is beneficial where it removes incidental burdens and harmful where it removes something constitutive of the good itself. Craftsmanship, education, friendship, communal trust, tradition, and contemplation all depend not only on the good sought, but the duration that unfolds in its pursuit; an unfolding that cannot be indefinitely compressed without changing the nature of the goods themselves.
This final consideration returns the inquiry to its architectonic order. Τέχνη governs how things are made; φρόνησις judges what should be done within particular circumstances; ποίησις apprehends the meaningful whole into which making and acting may be resolved; and, finally and perhaps most importantly, contemplation brings us into relation to goods and truths not themselves subordinated to production, goods and truths which cannot be so subordinated and remain the goods that they are.
Taken together, these eight white papers propose an understanding of technological opportunity grounded neither in increased technical capacity nor in a predetermined program for limiting innovation. They instead ask how human beings might make better because they see better: seeing technologies as acts of τέχνη governed by ποίησις; perceiving the patterns technological systems instantiate; recognizing how those patterns constitute environments and relations; deliberately shaping economic and communicative structures toward common goods; forming persons capable of questioning and ordering; preserving continuity through living memory; and recovering the temporal proportions within which meaningful human action can unfold.
The resulting conclusion is neither blind optimism nor pessimism about technology as such. Technology is instead characterized not by an instrumental neutrality but an overall indeterminacy, for which we ourselves are responsible: technological development becomes an opportunity for human flourishing insofar as technical extensions remain resoluble to the natural powers, goods, relations, and ends of the human person and community. We are not tasked with discovering some technological arrangement that finally removes the difficulties inherent in human making, but rather with continually cultivating genuine poietic vision, virtues of practical judgment, rightly-ordered communities, and cognitive habits through which those difficulties may be continually resolved into forms of life fittingly inhabited by human beings.
