Textual Depths,
Conversational Heights
While we love our courses and seminars, they can be rather intense commitments, with many lengthy readings, lectures, assignments, and live discussions. Sometimes, we lack the ability for such an undertaking—but want to keep alive the life of the mind!
A reading circle provides a less intensive (but still serious and structured) approach to intellectual development: a focused reading of a specific text (or closely-related set of texts) in the tradition, led by an instructor with expertise in the thinker, in regularly-scheduled live discussion sessions. These vary in structure between the more programmatic (i.e., proceeding through a definite series, as chapters of a book, or lectures, or the like) and the more wide-ranging (taking varied selections across different topics and of perhaps indefinite length).
Such studies will allow students to deepen their comprehension and gain practice in the discipline of reading well. Though we all benefit from the exchange of thought we gain by reading a text, the dynamic of living conversation brings new light and understanding to any work. By reading with others, rather than approaching the written word as a closed set of conclusions, we bring our minds into the ever-unfolding expanse of the λογός.
Reading groups are open to all full-time Enrolled members. Public participants may also register for a nominal fee.
