Reimagining Politics: Seminar on the Proposal for a Postliberal Order

News and Announcements| Seminar

What comes after liberalism?

In some sense for centuries, and most definitely for the past several decades, Western politics have been shaped by a largely presupposed consensus towards liberalism—an ideology founded upon individual autonomy, procedural neutrality, and technocratic governance. But today, cracks are widening in presumed foundation. Whether in the erosion of public trust, the fraying of communal bonds, or the growing incoherence of national purpose, many are asking: Is liberalism sustainable? What are the alternatives? How do we build something different?

This summer, the Lyceum Institute invites you to grapple with these very questions in our seminar: Politics: The Proposal for a Postliberal Order.

With discussion sessions spanning eight weeks from June 7 to August 2 (with a midterm break on July 5), this seminar offers a rigorous exploration of the most serious critiques of liberalism and the competing visions for what might replace it. Our focus? Three of the most influential voices in contemporary postliberal thought: D.C. Schindler, Patrick Deneen, and Adrian Vermeule.

Together, these thinkers challenge the ideological core of modern governance. Schindler confronts the metaphysical assumptions of liberalism itself, probing the very structure of our political reasoning. Deneen dissects liberalism’s internal contradictions and its failure to sustain the common good. Vermeule proposes a constitutional vision ordered toward justice, authority, and moral clarity. (Purchase of the linked books is required.)

Each week, participants will engage in intellectually serious discussion on these themes, guided by readings that capture the urgency and depth of the current debate. Whether you’re new to the conversation or already well-read in political theory, this seminar offers a chance to sharpen your understanding of our civilizational crossroads.

If you’re ready to look beyond the status quo, to think critically and constructively about the future of politics—this is your invitation. Enrollment in the seminar (at the link below) starts at $60.
